力率の改善
電力の品質について、比較のしやすい力率を考えてみます。
電気事業者から供給される電力は交流であり、交流電力は有効電力と無効電力に分けられます。
工場の受電設備から工場内を見た場合に、工場内でエネルギーとして使われるのが有効電力で、工場内に入ってそのまま戻ってくるのが無効電力です。
有効電力と無効電力の比で力率が定義され、無効電力の割合が大きいほど力率は悪くなります。
無効電力は使用する機器の特性で決まっているため、受電設備では工場内の各機器から要求される無効電力を減らすことはできません。
受電設備が工場内へ供給するのは、この有効電力と無効電力を合わせたもの：皮相電力です。
受電設備が供給する皮相電力の最大値は決まっていますので、無効電力が大きくなると有効電力は小さくなります。つまり、工場内で使えるエネルギーが少なくなります。
各機器の側で力率を改善できれば工場内で使用できるエネルギーが増え、また他にもいろいろなメリットが生じます。
